YouVersion records 80 percent increase in Bible app searches during 2020 pandemic: FR: Christianisme Quotidien
The year 2020 was marked by many disruptions, questions and uncertainties, but it is also the year when YouVersion saw “record” commitments in its Bible application.
Last week, YouVersion announced that 600 million searches were performed in the app this year, which is an 80% increase over the number of searches last year.
Bobby Gruenewald, the founder of YouVersion, thinks this spike in the use of the Bible app has something to do with the fact that 2020 is a “difficult year,” which has made many people turn to God and His word for answers and reassurance.
“It has been a difficult year with many people facing devastating loss, loneliness and fear,” said Gruenewald.
“While 2020 is a year that so many people say they would like to forget, we see it as a year to remember how God used the Bible App to help so many people who are looking for answers. Through all the hardships, people continue to seek God and look to the Bible for strength, peace and hope, ”he continued.
The app usage statistics suggest that Gruenewald may be right.
At the beginning of this year, the most frequent searches were the words “Bible in one year”, “new year”, “fast” and “faith”. However, when COVID-19 began to spread in March, the most searched word was “fear,” an indication that people may have been looking for Bible verses to combat fear amid the pandemic.
After a while, the main research shifted from “fear” to “peace”, “faith” and “hope”, which could mean that people were looking for passages that spoke of hope and peace and helped strengthen their sense of the word. faith.
Around May, the word “justice” appeared on the list of trending searches in the app.
Throughout the year, the words “healing”, “love” and “peace” were among the most searched terms in the app.
The YouVersion verse of the year, which is the most read Bible passage in 2020, is Isaiah 41:10. The verse says, “Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will support you with my victorious right hand.”
Gruenewald said these trending search terms reflect “what has weighed on the hearts and minds of people around the world at key times throughout the year.”
“They reveal how people seek God as they battle the difficult circumstances they faced in 2020, and this is something we can celebrate,” he added.
Overall, this year YouVersion has seen a remarkable increase in its bible app user engagements, with a total of 43.6 billion bible chapters read and 1.8 billion bible plans completed. In addition, its users listened to a total of 7.5 billion audio chapters. These numbers represent the highest global user engagements in YouVersion’s history.
His ‘Bible app for children‘experienced a similar trend this year with more than 22 million new installations in single devices, bringing the total worldwide application installations to 60 million. Users of this app have completed a total of 170 million Bible stories, a 90% increase from last year.
