Speaking previously about the film, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, who co-directed the film with Tyler Gillett, said it just wouldn’t have worked without them.

“They weren’t throwaway roles; they were very, very important and the core of what was great about the script.

“We couldn’t imagine the movie without any of them so not being perfectly locked in from the start was really scary.”

Discussing the script for the new film, Cox said The Drew Barrymore Show: “It’s Scream. These directors, I mean God, the directors [Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett] are just amazing.

“It’s a new franchise. It’s hip, it’s scary, it’s just a new Scream. It’s not a reboot, it’s not a remake, it’s just a brand new launch. . I think it’s going to be fantastic. “

This upcoming film is also the first in the series not to be directed by Wes Craven, who died in 2015.

Cox said it was quite difficult to reprise his role without having him there.

She said: “From the second I stepped on set I felt extremely moved and felt a real lack and longing for him.

“He had such a [a] special quality, kind and caring about him, not to mention his incredible talent as a filmmaker.

“I admired Wes immensely professionally but also as a friend.

“I think Wes would be so happy with the way Matt [Bettinelli-Olpin] and Tyler restarted this franchise. “

Scream hits theaters on January 14, 2022.
