The Castle is still Australia’s favorite movie
It may be 2022, but 1997 The castle is still Australia’s most popular film.
The film stars Michael Caton as Darryl Kerrigan as he battles the forced acquisition of his modest family home.
It spawned iconic quotes such as “Tell him he’s dreaming”, “How’s the serenity?”, “It’s the vibe”, and “It’s going straight to the pool hall”.
Back in the 90s, The castle won Best Original Screenplay at the AFI Awards, as well as Australian Film of the Year at the Australian Movie Convention.
Now, some 25 years later, it’s been crowned Australia’s favorite film.
More than one in five respondents, or 21%, chose The castle as their favorite, while Crocodile Dundee second with 16% and madmax came in third with 11 percent.
Co-writer and director Rob Stitch noted the film’s enduring popularity with viewers, despite the passage of time.
“Why did it last? The cast played it beautifully. It’s no small feat,” he told News Corp. “Television rehearsals also played an important role.”
This enduring popularity actually discouraged Stitch and his Working Dog colleagues from pursuing a sequel, with the team instead opting to let Australian viewers have fun with the original.
Despite The Castle 2 being off the table, there could still be more fun for fans of the iconic original.
“While we were shooting it, we had an idea to stage it one day. We would still love to do it,” Stitch said.
The same poll also crowned Hugh Jackman “Australia’s most admired celebrity”, with 14% of the vote.
Jackman beat Cathy Freeman, who had 9%, and Professor Peter Doherty and Olivia Newton-John, both on 8%.
