New York Public Library donates 500,000 books
New Yorkers of all ages can now treat their shelves to a new book.
The New York Public Library (NYPL) has announced that it will donate 500,000 books to city residents to keep as part of its “Library summer program.” Its goal is to help children, teens, and adults build their libraries at home, as well as keep youngsters productive during summer vacation.
Books are available at any of the library’s 92 locations in Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island. Some sites even offer titles in Spanish, Chinese, and large print.
“New York students and families have been through so much over the past two years. It is essential that during this time of recovery and renewal, our learning ecosystem does everything in its power to support and engage them,” said Brian Bannon, Director of Libraries and Education at the NYPL Merryl and James Tisch, in a statement earlier this month.
“Public libraries are uniquely positioned to do this while students are out of the classroom during the summer months, offering quality free programs to engage their minds while exciting them for books, reading, learning and their communities.”
In addition to the giveaway, NYPL also hosts free youth programs throughout the summer, including story times, reading challenges, and writing contests. It will also offer workshops for adults in technology training, job search assistance, English as a second language and citizenship courses.
Of course, with a free library card and no late fees, New Yorkers also have access to millions of books for countless adventures.
