Children’s books account for nearly 25% of Libris sales. Best Selling Titles

One in four books sold in the last 12 months by Libris, a traditional online bookstore in the Romanian market, was aimed at children or parenthood. The children’s books and children’s education categories have steadily increased their share of sales on, reaching 25%, compared to around 15% 3 years ago. Thus, with nearly 30,000 volumes in Romanian and English listed on the site, children’s books are approaching the popularity of fiction, a sign that parents are increasingly concerned about developing in children a taste for reading.

Among the most ordered children’s books were well-known titles such as “Main Recreation” (Mircea Sântimbreanu), “Seul au monde” (Hector Malot), “Childhood Memories” (Ion Creangă), but also new titles such as be “The Owl Who’s Afraid of the Dark” (Jill Tomlinson) or “500 Amazing and Funny Truths”.

The editorial offer for children brings together titles in Romanian and English, from nearly 500 publishing houses. The top publishing houses with the most titles on are led by Litera, followed by Didactica Publishing House, Art, Gama and Aramis.

Of the total number of children’s books available on the bookstore’s website, more than 12,000 titles are in Romanian (with immediate delivery from stock) and more than 14,800 titles in English (with delivery in 3-5 weeks ).

In the analyzed period (May 2021-April 2022) the top best-selling children’s authors are led by Ion Creanga monitoring by Jil Tomlinson and Hans Christian Andersen, and among the best-selling Romanian authors of all time are Ion Creangă, Ioana Chicet-Macoveiciuc, Mircea Sântimbreanu, Ion Luca Caragiale and Mihail Sadoveanu. The best-selling children’s volume is 500 amazing and funny truths, who remains in the top after being the most popular choice last year.

The books included in the school bibliography are popular year after year and are a constant choice for schools and many parents. Over the past year, however, we have noticed increases in many other titles, not included in the recommended bibliography, which is a good sign that little ones are discovering many more current and interesting stories that can transform them, page per page, into enthusiastic readers – says Laura Țeposu, CEO of Libris.

However, lately, we have noticed that parents and schools with a more generous budget allocated to the book fund are moving towards current titles and series loved by children. Harry Potter, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Charlie Joe Jackson’s Guide to NOT Reading, The Chronicles of Narnia, Warrior Cats, The Adventures of Dunno, Momilandia, 500 Amazing and Funny Truths, Pettson and Findus are examples of popular titles and volumes children. – said Laura Țeposu

It is obvious to us that the section dedicated to children and parents will continue to grow, and we encourage this through the most complete range of books possible, advantageous prices and fast delivery. At the same time, we continue to encourage reading among the youngest, with short and long-term strategies, special projects and impact initiatives, such as the CarteTeca project, thanks to which we have already equipped nearly 150 libraries schools with titlesadded Laura Țeposu.

According to company data, during the reporting period, the average order was 105 lei. Next to the children’s books in the basket are fiction books, but also parenting, personal development or textbooks and school books. Of the total number of customers who ordered children’s books on, a quarter returned for at least one new order during the period analyzed
